Marmaton Valley High’s softball and baseball teams reached the semifinals of their respective Class 2-1A regional tournaments. That’s as far as the Wildcat squads got.
At home in Moran, Marmaton Valley’s girls fell 15-0 in four innings to Jayhawk-Linn High’s Jayhawks. Pittsburg-St. Mary’s Colgan High beat Chetopa 4-2 in the other semifinal game.
Jayhawk-Linn won the regional title and a berth in next week’s state tournament. The Jayhawks beat Colgan 8-6.
“What could go wrong did for us in this game,” said Brenda Mills, Marmaton Valley head softball coach. “The kids kept their chins up and battled but nothing went right.”
Maggie Meiwes pitched 2 1/3 innings and Hannah Endicott worked 1 1/3 innings. Jayhawk-Linn had 10 hits in the game.
Endicott, Kailey Boyd and Kacie Shadden each had a single.
“We’re going to miss our seniors, who were disappointed,” Mills said. “But I have complete confidence the underclassmen will step up and do a good job next season.”
Marmaton Valley’s boys were in Pittsburg Tuesday taking on Pittsburg-Colgan in a semifinal. Colgan collected a three-inning, run-rule victory 15-0.
“We knew going into this game we would have to play good defense because they (Colgan) would hit the ball,” said Derek Scharff, MVHS head baseball coach. “We missed four pop-ups that would have got us out of the inning with two runs on the board.”
Instead, Colgan scored seven runs in the first inning. The Panthers led 12-0 after two innings.
Cole Becker and Jimmy Frye pitched for the Wildcats. Colgan had seven hits.
The only hit of the game for Marmaton Valley was a single by Levi Ramsey.
“We’re a young team and if everyone comes back next year, I think we will have a good team that competes in a lot of ballgames,” Scharff said.
