MORAN — The Marmaton Valley volleyball program hosted a tournament Tuesday night featuring junior varsity and varsity squads from Madison, Hartford and Crest.
In the junior varsity tournament, Marmaton Valley faced off against Crest for its first game of the evening.
In a tightly contested first set that went back and forth between the Wildcats and the Lancers, Marmaton Valley edged out a 25-23 victory. A first set win is essential in the junior varsity setting because the matches Tuesday were played as a best-of-three scenario.
With the 1-0 edge, Marmaton Valley carried its momentum into the second set.
The Wildcats took that one in more dominant fashion, winning 25-11 to take the game from the Lancers.
In the second JV matchup of the night, Marmaton Valley was matched up against Hartford. The Wildcats won both sets (25-12, 25-14) handily and took that game as well.
Sophomore Emily Smart and junior Emily Plaschka led Marmaton Valley with 25 and 16 points, respectively.
Offensively, Marmaton Valley’s JV squad was dominant.
Junior Magie Stevenson and freshman Patricia Outlan led the team with 10 and four kills, respectively.
As for the varsity squad, Marmaton Valley swept the competition by earning three victories Tuesday night.
After dropping the first set against Madison 25-19, the Wildcats won their next two against the Bulldogs to win 2-1 (19-25, 25-20, 25-19).
Against Hartford and Crest, Marmaton Valley needed just two sets in each matchup to earn the wins.
Marmaton Valley won 2-0 against Hartford (25-15, 25-18) behind the offensive performance of senior Mackenzie Tynon, who recorded eight points and seven kills.
In Marmaton Valley’s contest against Crest, Tynon added eight more kills and three blocks en route to the Wildcats 2-0 win (25-10, 26-24).
After grabbing three straight victories Tuesday night, the Marmaton Valley varsity squad improved to 5-2 on the young season.
“I was extremely proud of the girls (Tuesday night),” head coach Terra Kegler said.
“They played with heart and emotion. There were a couple of times they could have given up, but they didn’t. They fought through and got the wins. I hope (Tuesday night) gives them all confidence and shows them that when they focus, they can be a very good team. We had great teamwork tonight and everyone had positive attitudes.”
