Marmaton Valley softball was able to earn a split with St. Paul on Tuesday.
St. Paul jumped on the Wildcats early in game one but Marmaton Valley was able to rally for an 8-5 victory.
St. Paul scored three runs in the first inning and added a run in the third and fourth to build a 5-0 lead.
The Wildcats’ comeback began in the bottom of the fourth when Shaylee Woods scored to put Marmaton Valley on the board. They added two more runs in the fifth with Kyla Drake scoring on a Trinitee Gutierrez triple and a Woods single scored Gutierrez.
Marmaton Valley still entered the sixth inning trailing 5-3, but the offense got going quickly when Makayla Brooks led off with a home run.
After the next two batters reached base, Ashlynn Pinkerton singled to set the table for Drake. Drake doubled to drive in the go-ahead run. Drake came around to score later in the inning as an insurance run.
The Wildcats locked up the St. Paul offense in the seventh and escaped with an 8-5 win.
Game two was a struggle for the Wildcats. They lost 17-6.
The Wildcats scored three runs in the first inning with Isabelle Bigelow, Karlie Stephens and Drake all scoring, but they couldn’t keep up over the course of the game against the powerful St. Paul offense.
Monday vs. Jayhawk-Linn
Jayhawk-Linn swept Marmaton Valley in dominating fashion on Monday night, winning 13-0 and 13-3.
With a 1-3 record this week, Marmaton Valley ends its season with a 10-10 mark as they prepare for regional play.
BASEBALL
Marmaton Valley baseball lost a pair of games to St. Paul on Tuesday.
The Wildcats lost game one 13-2. Gage Adams got the start and suffered his first loss of the season.
“Gage pitched a pretty good game overall,” Marmaton Valley coach Derek Scharff said. “He struggled in the second inning, but he settled down and finished the game. If we make some plays on defense then we can keep the game closer.”
The senior struggled with his control throughout the game. He surrendered six walks and four hit batsmen.
Adams did have a good day at the plate. He went 2-for-3 batting and ended up with a double and walk. He also had one of the two Wildcat RBIs.
