FORT SCOTT — Iola High’s Mustangs did all they could Tuesday. They swept Fort Scott High’s Tigers in a Southeast Kansas League doubleheader.

There is still an outside chance the Mustangs could end up with a share of the SEK baseball title. Work was being done today to see if they could reschedule a rained out SEK doubleheader with Columbus.

“We’re trying to get it scheduled for Friday,” said Martin Bambick, IHS athletic director. Bambick was on his way to a SEK league meeting this morning and will know later if the games will be played.

The Mustangs had to win Tuesday to stay in the running. They beat the Tigers 10-2 and 9-2.

Iola is 10-4 in SEK play and 13-5 overall as is Pittsburg. Both have games with Columbus remaining. Pittsburg and Columbus (2-8, 2-11) are playing Thursday.

Independence swept Parsons Tuesday and stands atop the SEK at 12-4 and 13-5. If the Mustangs and Titans play Friday and Iola wins both games, they will share the league title.

If the games are not played between Iola and Columbus, the best the Mustangs can leave the SEK at is second.

Jerrik Sigg pitched five solid innings for the Mustangs in the opener with the Tigers. He gave up two runs on one hit and four walks plus struck out four.

Aaron Barclay finished the game on the mound. He hit a batter and struck out one.

The Mustangs scored a run in the first inning, then had two runs in each of the next two innings. They led 5-2 after three innings.

Iola added a run in the fourth, one in the fifth and three more in the sixth. The Mustangs posted the 10-2 win.

Braden Larson hammered out a single and a triple. Levi Ashmore and Clint Heffern each had a single and a double.

Derrick Weir hit two singles. Devon Conner and Drew Walden had a double apiece. Sigg and Mason Coons each hit a single.

In the second game, the Mustangs were up 2-1 when they broke open the game. They got six of their 15 hits in the fourth inning and plated five runs.

Iola added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Fort Scott was able to score a run in the seventh for the final 9-2 count.
