CHANUTE — Nathan Sprague starred for the Mustang track and field team in the Chanute Junior Varsity Meet.
He picked up a pair of first place finishes, including an individual first in the 400-meter dash. He also added a first in the 4×400 relay.
“Nathan has really taken a noticeable step of improvement from his freshman season,” Iola coach Dana Daugharthy said.
Tayton Driskel joined Sprague on that 4×400 team and earned a second-place finish in both the 100-meter dash and long jump.
Braden Plumlee, Chase Regehr, Cole Regehr and Kendall Jay combined to turn in a dominating victory in the 4×800, winning by nearly 40 seconds..
“They really had no one pushing them the entire way,” Daugharthy said. “This is just the beginning for what the 4×800 team can do.”
All those performances combined to earn the team a second-place finish in the meet, behind Paola.
THE GIRLS team was led by freshman Ashleigh Nicholas.
Nicholas earned three gold medals in the meet. She took first place in the long jump, high jump and intermediate hurdles.
“She has really been impressive these first few track meets,” Daugharthy said. “She works really hard in practice, and she is going to be able to make an impact immediately in varsity competition as a freshman.”
Iola varsity track and field competes on Friday in Coffeyville.
