GARNETT Iolas talented underclassmen traveled to Garnett over the weekend to compete in the Anderson County wrestling invitational on Saturday and came away very successful, finishing fourth out of 13 teams despite only bringing four wrestlers.
Leading the pack for Iola was sophomore Logan Brown who dominated in his first taste of action this season, finishing first overall with a perfect 5-0 record.
Brown rumbled his way through the heavyweight, 285-pound bracket, winning each match definitively all of the way up through the championship match.
Brown opened things with a 14-second pin of Anderson Countys Lane Palmer and followed that up with a 54-second pin of Osawatomies Quinton Lea.
He then recorded two pins over Caney Valley players. He took down Brayden Smith in 28 seconds and topped that by beating Ethan Moreland in 18 seconds.
He took on Santa Fe Trails Ryely Seals in the championship round and despite being pushed into the second period for the first time that day, he pinned Seals 48 seconds into that period for the championship.
Not to be overshadowed, freshmen Trent Jones and Adam Atwell both made it to the pinnacle of their weight classes but lost in their championship matches, earning them both second place.
In the 138-pound bracket, Atwell opened things will a loss to Frontenacs Riley McDaniel, falling by pin in 3:09.
After a second round bye, Atwell rebounded versus Eries Grant Taylor with a 37-second pin.
Atwell then got a shot at the championship match versus Frontenacs Jeremiah Melnick and though it was close, Atwell advanced by a 4-3 decision to the championship round for a rematch with McDaniel.
However, McDaniel proved to be just as tough as the first go-around as Atwell lost by a 19-4 tech fall, giving him silver on the day.
Meanwhile, in the 145-pound bracket, Jones started off with pins of Parsons Noah Caven (2:55) and Labette Countys Andon Searles (1:02).
Jones got tripped up in round three, falling to eventual champion Mason Jameson by a 5-2 decision.
Jones recovered in the semifinal, besting Santa Fe Trails Carter Greenfield by a 6-4 decision to advance to the championship match versus Jameson.
Similarly to Atwell, Jones couldnt hang with the dominant wrestler from Frontenac and fell to second by a 12-1 major decision.
