FORT SCOTT — Five Iola High golfers matched up in Fort Scott on Monday.

The event was scheduled following Iola’s JV golf meet at Anderson County being postponed.

Iola took home seventh place as a team with a final score of 373. Frontenac, Independence and Pittsburg rounded out the top three spots. Fort Scott and Chanute placed in fourth and fifth while Coffeyville came in sixth place.

Brennen Coffield led the Mustangs finishing in 11th place after shooting an 83.

“Brennen is playing well and striking the ball great,” Iola head coach Jeremy Sellman said. “He’s a great player and his game is impressive for such a young player. As a freshman I am blown away with his composure and his good-decision making on the course. He’s a grinder. He’s always working after practice on his game and his dedication shows.”

Xander Sellman finished in 24th place after shooting an 89.

“Xander was cruising along, playing great golf then hit some road construction mid round and lost several holes to bad breaks and missed opportunities,” said Sellman. “When he puts in a round without those big issues he’s going to be pushing the front-runners. The competition is really tough this year.

Baron Folk finished tied for 40th place after shooting a 100.

“Baron has really impressed me this year,” Sellman said. “His game is improving every week and I feel he’s going to hit his stride at the right time. Baron was excellent off the tee finding the fairways 85 percent of the time. He struggled putting, as everyone did. The greens had just been aerated, making putting difficult.”

Chris Holloway came in 44th place.

“Chris hit a wall on the first hole and struggled to recover the rest of the round,” Sellman explained. “Chris was struggling with his game all day and I know he was ready to give up but he buckled down and pushed through, trying to put something together to take something positive from the round. I know Chris will make the adjustments and find his game again.”

Ethan Harris played in his first tournament of the year and came in 58th place.

“Ethan played above expectations for the day,” Sellman said. “Ethan’s a hard worker who has really only played two years and is doing well for his experience in the game.”

Iola hosts the Buck Quincy Invitational at the Allen County Country Club next Monday, April 24 at 11 a.m.
