HS Tennis: Iola

The Iola boys were without their No. 2 singles player and half of their No. 1 doubles team on Thursday at Pittsburg but despite that and the weather, they still walked away with seven total team wins including going 6-2 in singles play.

“Considering the cold and windy conditions, I think we played fairly well,” head coach Dan Berg said. “I was glad that our players could concentrate. We have three tournaments next week so it was nice to play well heading into a busy week.”

No. 1 singles player Elijah Fawson went 3-1 falling only to Pittsburg’s Dakota Caudle who went 4-0.

Jon Miller, who normally partners with Bret Plumlee on the Mustang number one doubles team, filled in at the number two single’s spot and went 3-1 on the day.

Eason Cheung and Adrian Nading made up the No. 1 doubles team. They managed one win over Keith Perkins and Darius Tinley who were Pitts-burg players filling in for Columbus.

Since Iola only had five players available, Gabe Berry partnered with a Pittsburg player to make up a No. 2 doubles team. They didn’t win a game but Berg was happy that Berry, who’s in his first year of tennis, got some more experience.

Iola should be back at full strength next week when they play at three tournaments. They’ll open the week on Tuesday at Chanute and then head back to Pittsburg on Thursday before closing their week at Neodesha on Saturday.
