COFFEYVILLE — Clint Heffern only pitched two innings. He didn’t give up a hit or a run. The senior did walk two but struck out three.
Heffern was the winning pitcher for Iola High’s Mustangs in a 13-1 romp over Coffeyville’s Field Kindly High Golden Tornado Thursday. The game only lasted three innings.
The Mustangs benefited from five Coffeyville errors in the first inning as they scored nine times. Mason Coons, Braden Larson and Devon Conner had consecutive singles to drive in runs. With two gone, Jerrik Sigg delivered a bases-loaded triple.
In a seven-run second inning, the Mustangs pounded out eight singles against Coffeyville.
Coons and Larson were 3-for-3 with three singles each in the game. Conner drove in two runs and he and Levi Ashmore each had two singles.
Sigg tripled. Jarred Latta, Shelton Reno and C. Heffern each had a single.
Aaron Barclay pitched the third inning for Iola. He gave up one run on one hit and one hit batter.
The second game was a bit tighter.
“They threw a pitcher at us that pitched side-armed and he moved the ball around well. He kept us off balance a lot,” said Mark Percy, Mustang head coach.
But the Mustangs won 5-1.
In the first inning, Ashmore walked. Then on a one-out double by Sigg, Ashmore was tagged out at home. Drew Walden came through with an RBI double with two gone in the inning.
Coffeyville used two hits in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1-1. It stayed that way until the fifth inning.
Reno was hit by a pitch and C. Heffern drew a one-out walk. A balk brought Reno home with the go-ahead run.
Larson cranked out the first home run of the season for the Mustangs. Coons had led off the sixth with a single and Larson parked a pitch over the fence for a two-run home run.
Iola added a run in the seventh with a double by Ashmore and a single by C. Heffern. Sigg drove in the run on a sacrifice fly to center field.
