Iola High’s Mustangs are atop the Southeast Kansas League following a doubleheader sweep of visiting Parsons High’s Vikings Monday.
The Mustangs fell behind the winless Vikings 4-3 then scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Iola went on to notch a 7-4 victory.
In the second game, Jarred Latta limited the Vikings to two hits, issued three walks and hit a batter while recording four strikeouts. The Mustangs cruised to an 11-1 win in five innings.
The victories put the Mustangs at 7-1 in SEK play and overall. They are scheduled to play in the Humboldt High Walter Johnson Baseball Tournament Thursday.
Iola takes on Humboldt at 9 a.m. followed by Neodesha playing Yates Center. The tournament will be played at Neosho County Community College in Chanute.
Parsons had a 2-1 lead after two innings. Iola manufactured two runs in the third.
With one gone, Levi Ashmore reached on an error and scored on a two-out base hit by Jerrik Sigg. Sigg ended up at second on the throw home and came around to score on a single by Corey Taylor.
The Vikings battled to get two runs in the fourth to regain the lead, 4-3.
Sigg pitched four innings and allowed four runs on three hits, four walks and one hit batter. Sigg struck out six.
In the bottom of the fourth, Aaron Barclay started the rally with a one-out base hit. Devon Conner drew a walk and Latta reached on a fielder’s choice.
Ashmore was safe on an error then Clint Heffern doubled. Sigg’s base hit drove in two runs.
With the 7-4 lead, Heffern came on to pitch three hitless innings. He faced nine batters and struck out three.
Heffern had a single and a double while Sigg hit two singles. Taylor, Barclay and Conner each had a single.
Taylor hit a three-run home run in the first inning of the second game to send the Mustangs on their way. Iola had a 5-1 lead when it scored five runs in the fourth.
Three of those came on a home run by Mason Coons. Taylor had driven in two more runs on a single earlier in the inning.
Taylor’s third hit of the night, a single, drove in the final run in the fifth to end the game. Coons also had a single in the contest. Ashmore had a single and a double.
Braden Larson doubled. Sigg and Drew Walden, who hit for the first time this season, each had a single.
