Mustangs push winning streak to eight

NEODESHA — Iola High’s Mustangs have won eight games in a row with a non-league doubleheader sweep of Neodesha High’s Bluestreaks Friday.
The Mustangs beat the Bluestreaks 12-4 in the opener then notched a 10-5 decision in the nightcap.
Iola steps back into Southeast Kansas League play today at Iola’s Riverside Park. The Mustangs host league-leading Columbus High’s Titans starting at 4:30.
The Titans, who played two SEK games Thursday and two more Saturday, come into the games at 8-0 in the league and 8-2 overall. The Mustangs are 7-1 in SEK play and 11-1 overall.
Iola enters a stretch of league games with Columbus then going to Labette County Friday in a makeup date.
Next week, the Mustangs go to Fort Scott then host Pittsburg (7-1, 9-1) on May 12.
The Mustangs scored four runs in fourth inning the first game at Neodesha to tie the game up. They went up by one in the fifth then added four runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh.
Corey Taylor threw four innings, Clint Heffern pitched two and got the win and Levi Ashmore pitched the seventh inning.
Heffern, Jerrik Sigg and Braden Larson each had two singles for Iola. Hitting a base hit each were Ashmore, Taylor, Mason Coons, Drew Walden and Devon Conner.
Neodesha took a 2-0 lead in the second of the second game. Iola tied it up in the third. The Mustangs took control with a four-run fourth adding two runs each in the fifth and seventh innings.
The Bluestreaks had a bit of a rally in the bottom of the seventh. They scored three runs before Ashmore came in to shut them down. Coons was the winning pitcher for Iola.
Taylor was 4-for-5 with four singles. Ashmore and Larson each had two singles and a double. Sigg hit two singles. Heffern and Jarred Latta had a single each.
