RIVERTON — Iola High’s Mustangs are still dancing, while Humboldt’s boys saw their season come to a heartbreaking conclusion.
The Mustangs took the lead in the second quarter and maintained a healthy margin the rest of the way Friday in a 68-59 win over Riverton to open the Class 3A Substate Tournament.
Iola (9-12) advances to Wednesday’s semifinal round at Caney Valley (17-3) a 70-19 victor over Cherryvale. The winner will head to Columbus next Saturday to face either Burlington or Anderson County with a berth in the state tournament on the line.
Meanwhile, Humboldt saw its end with a 50-49 loss to Girard when a last-second field goal attempt was off the mark as the buzzer sounded.
Girard moves on to face Fredonia, which defeated Baxter Springs, in Wednesday’s semifinal.
SEVERAL IOLA and Humboldt wrestlers are still in action Saturday for Day 2 of state wrestling.
The Mustangs’ Addilyn Wacker and Zoie Hesse are still alive in the girls Class 4A Wrestling Tournament in Salina, while Humbooldt’s Cole Mathes, Taevyn Baylor, Savannah Koch and Gabriela Vargas-Garcia are still vying for a medal at the Class 3-1A state meet in Hays.
While all of the local wrestlers are on the consolation side of the bracket, having lost once already, both Iola’s Wacker and Humboldt’s are assured of state medals.
