HUMBOLDT — The Iola Middle School girls and boys track and field teams took first and second place, respectively, in the eighth-grade division of the Humboldt Invitational Track Thursday while the Humboldt Middle School Cubs kept the championship trophy right at home.
With events lasting well into the evening, athletes from across the Southeast Kansas regional braved the cold temperatures with the final team event deciding the ultimate outcome.
Cubs hold on for eighth-grade title
The 800-meter Medley Relay Team’s first place finish may have been the difference-maker as the Humboldt Cubs took the eighth-grade invite title 139 to Iola Middle School’s 102.
In other relay action, the Cubs took second in the 100 and the 200. Individually, Jax Hill took first in the 100-meter dash and Envy Oberbeck took fourth and Breckin Guenther fifth. In the 100-meter hurdles, Zane Sanchez took first, followed by Lassman in third. In the 200, Guenther took second. In the 4oo, Mason Miller took second, followed by Deegan Megenity in third.
In field events, Wrestler took second in the javelin while Braxton Fitzmaurice took fourth. Owen Works took second in the pole vault. Oberbeck and Hill took first and second, respectively, in the long jump. Miller took first in the high jump, followed by Sanchez in third, Lassman in fourth and Thomas in fifth.
Lady Mustangs bring
Invite trophy to Iola
A combination of team and individual efforts catapulted the Mustangs to first place in the eighth-grade girls division. Iola swept every relay, except for the 800-medley finale, where they took fourth place. Individually, Haidyn Desmarteau took first in the 200, followed by teammate Camryn Wille in fourth. She took second in the 100, followed by teammates Kinzley Fountain in third and Wille in fourth. Desmarteau also took first in the long jump, followed by Fountain in second.
In distance events, Mariah Mathis took first in the 1600, followed by a second-place Moira Springer. Cora Boren took first in the 3600, followed by a fifth-place Eliana Higginbotham. In the hurdles, Bayleigh Scheibmeir took third in the 100 and fourth in the 200, followed by a fifth-place Blayke Folk. In the 400, Liliana Jerome took second and Springer took third in the 800.
In other field events, Mariah Mathis took third in the high jump, followed by a fifth-place Helena Morrison. Sophia Doty took second in discus. Breighlynn Rutherford took second in the shot put, followed by Doty in fifth.
Eighth-grade Mustangs take second
Although taking second place, the Mustangs had plenty of gold and silver medals to complement their Invite trophy. In individual events, Hunter McDaniel took first in the 200, followed by Jaxen Mueller in second, Milo Franklin in third and Parker Pfaff in fourth. Iola also took first in the 100 relay and the 200 relay.
Chance Conley took first in the 400, followed by Findley in third. In the 100, Lucas Boeken took second, Mueller took third and Franklin took fifth. Pfaff swept the 100 and 200 hurdles. Kramer took second in both hurdles competitions and Boeken took third in the 100. In distance running, Adam Klubek took first in the 1600, followed by Konner Morrison in fifth. Klubek also took first in the 3200, followed by a fourth-place Bradley Cooper.
In field events, Mueller took third in the long jump. Franklin took third in the high jump and Kramer took fifth in the shot put.
Yates Center takes second
An abundance of individual performances lifted the Wildcats to second place in the eighth-grade girls division. Ella Cummings and Morgan Crumrine made names for themselves with Cummings taking first in the 100, second in the 200, followed by third-place teammate Tristyn Steele. Crumrine dominated with first place runs in the 800, 1600 and took third in the 200. In the 100 hurdles, Loryn Kress took second.
With only one relay team competing, the Wildcats had a perfect night with the 800 medley team taking first overall. In field events, Whitley Shafer took first in the discus and Cummings took second in the javelin.
