Mustangs host SEK golf teams

Trying to hit the golf balls hard, straight and low were golfers from all nine Southeast Kansas League schools here Tuesday. Iola High’s Mustangs hosted the second league designated golf tournament of the season.
Windy conditions made it tough on scores as the golfers played the 18-hole event at Cedar brook Golf Course.
Coffeyville won the tournament, one stroke ahead of Pittsburg. Coffeyville had a four-man total of 334 followed by Pittsburg at 335. Chanute was third at 340.
Fort Scott placed fourth with a 348 followed by Labette County at 350, Independence at 351 and Parsons at 366.
Iola finished eighth with a 400. Columbus was ninth at 406.
Leading Iola was Doug Stewart with a 97 (46-51). Kris Collins carded a 99 (52-47) and Jarrett Mosbrucker shot a 100 (52-48). Zach Crawford had a 104 (49-55).
Sam Shallah had 111 (59-52) and Hayden Wolf shot a 200 (100-100).
Jon Nichols of Pittsburg turned in the best score of the day, winning the individual top medal with a 76.
Caleb Sparks of Labette County shot a 78 and Mitch Hale of Chanute, who is the overall SEK leader by two strokes, carded a 79 Tuesday. Nichols is in second place overall along with Pittsburg teammate An-drew Joy, who had an 80 Tuesday.
Coffeyville’s Brett Yeu-banks also had an 80 at Cedarbrook. Coffeyville, which is the team leader in the SEK, had Tyler Watts shooting an 82 and Luke Vacca with an 83.
Also hitting an 83 on the course was Fort Scott’s Tanner Beckham. Chanute’s Cameron Wiltse had an 84.
Tied at 85 were Independence’s Peyton Botts and Levi Leiker and Pittsburg’s Ryan Buckner.
Iola plays in the the Pittsburg High Invitational next Tuesday.
It will host the annual IHS Buck Quincy Invitational April 26 at Allen County Country Club.
The next SEK designated tournament is April 29 at Columbus.
