With just a few weeks of play left, the Iola Mustangs are going full steam ahead after taking third place at the Pittsburg Invitational Tuesday.
Freshman Mosiah Fawson continues to leave his mark in his debut season. He took third overall in No. 1 singles after opening the competition with a loss to Wyatt Shultz of Parsons 8-0, then rebounded with an 8-0 victory over Pittsburg’s John Lee to break into the third-place match. He ended the day with an 8-6 victory over Chanute’s Arthur Schmitt.
In doubles, No. 1 team Ethan Riebel and Brody Thompson took fourth overall. The duo opened the day with an 8-1 loss but rebounded with an 8-0 victory over Joaquin Miranda and Johnathan Winzer of Pittsburg to qualify for the third-place match. There, he fell to Joseph Schmidt and Matthew Morris of Bishop Miege 8-6.
Iola’s No. 2 doubles team of Donovan Nee and Simon Mueller took third place. Nee and Mueller opened an 8-0 loss but qualified for the third-place match after rebounding for an 8-5 win over Jaxon Dhooghe and Braedon Carter of Pittsburg. They wrapped up the day with an 8-4 victory over Roman Henztzen and Zeke Rodriguez of Bishop Miege.
In No. 2 doubles, Trapper Boren took fifth after wrapping up the day with an 8-0 victory over Finian Foraker of Coffeyville. Boren landed in the fifth place match after opening the tournament with an 8-1 loss to Tanner Nolting of Parsons, then falling 8-0 to Jacob Berger of Pittsburg.
