It’s confirmed.

Iola High’s Mustangs will have an opportunity to claim a share of the 2012 Southeast Kansas League baseball title.

Columbus High’s Titans, who swept a doubleheader with Coffeyville Tuesday, agreed to make up the league doubleheader with the Mustangs. The Titans (4-8, 4-11) have makeup twin bills with Pittsburg (10-4, 11-5) today and Iola (10-4, 13-5) on Friday.

Independence High’s Bulldogs clinched at least a share of the SEK championship with a sweep of Parsons High’s Vikings on Tuesday. The Bulldogs, who handed the Mustangs two losses in league play, finished at 12-4 in the SEK and 13-5 overall.

The Mustangs have to win two games Friday at Columbus to share the title. The SEK does not break ties. If Pittsburg takes two from the Titans today, there could be a three-way tie for the baseball title.

According to Fort Scott Tribune sports editor Scott Nuzum, who has the SEK records, this is the first season the SEK champion has lost more than three league games. If the three-way tie happens, it will be first for SEK baseball.

For the second year in a row, the Mustangs are in the SEK title hunt right to the end. Last year, they lost a doubleheader to Pittsburg and dropped to third place. In their eighth season of competitive baseball, the Mustangs are on the verge of a SEK co-championship in their last season in the league.
