INDEPENDENCE — Iola High’s Mustangs ended their tennis season at Thursday’s 2011 Kansas Class 4A Regional Tournament hosted by Independence High School.
The regional tournament was moved from Friday-Saturday to Thursday-Friday competition be-cause of state forensic competitions.
Iola had two play-in matches on Thursday. Sophomore Zeph Larney lost his singles match 6-3, 6-3 to Cody Spainhower of Columbus.
In doubles action, Iola senior Chris Michaels and sophomore Drew Smith won their doubles play-in match. They beat Michael Banowertz and Caleb Webster of Labette County 7-5, 6-3.
Michaels and Smith dropped their opening-round match in bracket play, 6-0, 6-0, to Tyler Posch and Gavin Webster of Independence. That concluded their season.
Also in doubles, sophomores Jordan Strickler and Andrew Lowell lost 6-0, 6-1 to Tucker Hoover and Sam Camp of Winfield.
In singles, Iola sophomore Garrett Catron lost 6-0, 6-3 to Fort Scott’s Ben Bristley.
“We showed a lot of promise,” said Lyle Kern, Iola High tennis coach. “Next year we will have the same team with the exception of Chris.
“It has been a fun season. Watching the improvement each of the players made has me looking forward to next year.”
