CHANUTE — Iola High’s Mustangs got a good look at the golf course they will compete on next Monday in a 2012 Kansas Class 4A Regional Golf Tournament. They played in Monday’s Chanute High Invitational at Quarry Stone Country Club.
The Mustangs came up short in winning the tournament Monday. Coffeyville ran away from the field with a 319. Iola ended up fourth with a team score of 347. Independence placed a distant second to Coffeyville with a 337 and Fort Scott was third at 342.
All the teams playing Monday along with Pittsburg are at today’s final Southeast Kansas League designated tournament. The Mustangs are battling for the SEK championship in today’s Fort Scott High Invitational.
At Chanute, freshmen Kaden Macha and Shane Walden finished seventh and eighth, respectively. Macha shot rounds of 42 and 41 for an 83 while Walden carded even rounds of 42 for an 84.
Senior Zach Crawford tied for 19th with an 89 (45-44). Freshman Drake Dieker (46-45) and senior Kris Collins (47-44) were among a group of golfers tying for 23rd coming in at 91. Freshman Isaiah Grover finished with a 96 (47-49).
Today, the Mustangs’ focus on the SEK team championship. Macha went into today’s final tournament leading the individual scores.
The last time Iola won an SEK golf championship was in 1980 when the Mustangs won a 27-hole league tournament. This is the final SEK competition for the Iola High golf team. Iola moves to the Pioneer League next year.
