OSAWATOMIE — Welcome back Darin Hutton.
The Iola High senior thrower missed the first part of the track season because of illness. On Thursday, Hutton was a double-gold medal winner in the throwing events for the Mustangs.
Hutton led a 1-2-6 finish by the Mustangs in the discus and a 1-5-6 finish in the shot put. Iola won five field events racking up points even before the running events began at Thursday’s Osawatomie High Invitational.
The Mustangs won eight of 18 events, scoring 93 points in six field events. They had 172 points in a runaway championship over second place Osawatomie with 99 points.
Don’t forget about the Iola High Fillies. The girls piled up 133 points to win their division. Spring Hill and Christ Prep of Kansas City tied for second with 97.5 points.
“This was a huge point total for the number of girls who competed for us,’ said Marvin Smith, Iola High head track coach. “Winning seven events was a shot in the arm. I didn’t really expect to win the meet but I forgot to tell the girls.”
The Fillies did not enter anyone in the long jump, triple jump, 800 meters, 1600 meters or the 3200 meters.
“For the boys, we had some really good performances but the wind hurt some marks and helped others,” Smith said.
Starting with the Mustangs, Ethan Fulton set a new meet record; no, not in the 110-meter high hurdles, but in the long jump. He won the event with a leap of 22 feet, 6 inches. Aaron Fulton was second at 20’7 1/2”.
Ethan did win the high hurdles in 14.6 seconds, just two-hundredths of a second off the meet record. Aaron was third in 15.3 seconds.
Aaron grabbed a gold medal with a personal-best throw of 171’3” in the javelin, where Iola was 1-2-3. Ralph Shafer took the silver at 156’6” and Charles Apt got the bronze at 150’2”.
Hutton’s winning throw in the discus was 121’10” followed by Kyler Thompson at 117’8”. Kyle Heffern was sixth at 104’8”.
Hutton claimed gold in shot with a toss of 44’8”. Heffern was fifth at 37’2 1/2” and Thompson was sixth at 37 feet.
Drew Shepherd captured gold in the pole vault, clearing 11 feet. Dylan Lower was third at 9 feet.
Iola’s 4×800-meter relay team of Aaron Cheung, Christian Kauth, Ryan Weir and Seth Browning won the race in 8 minutes, 53.2 seconds. Roman Yocham was the gold medalist in the 3200-meter run in 10:58.3.
Shane Snavely placed second in the 200-meter dash in 23.9 seconds. Mikal Bossell was third in the 400-meter dash in 54.6 seconds.
Browning finished third in the 800-meter run in 2:03.5 and Yocham was third in the 1600-meter run in 5:03.4.
Ethan Fulton placed third in the 100-meter dash in 11.1 seconds. He combined with Aaron Fulton, Snavely and Browning for third in the 4×100-meter relay race in 45.5 seconds.
Kauth was fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 37’6 3/4”. Browning, Apt, Bossell and Snavely combined for a fourth-place medal in the 4×400-meter relay race in 3:39.7.
THE FILLIES were led by Maggie Wilson, who earned two individual golds and one relay gold medal. Wilson set a new meet pole vault record at 10’6”. Teammate Breanna Stout was third at 7 feet.
Wilson won the 100-meter dash in 12.9 seconds with teammate Jazmyne Honeycutt in second at 13.2 seconds. Wilson and Honeycutt combined with Kendra Taiclet and Kelsey Larson to win the 4×100-meter relay gold in 51.9 seconds.
Larson was another double-gold individual winner. She edge out a runner at the finish line winning the 400-meter dash in 62.4 seconds. She won the 200-meter dash in 28.6 seconds with Honeycutt in third at 29.8.
Kirstin McGuffin won the javelin event with a throw of 113’6 inches. Mindy Powelson was third at 105’5” and Ty Ellis took fourth at 95’10”.
Katlyn Cleaver took the gold in the discus with a distance of 103’9”. McGuffin placed third at 88’9”. Cleaver was third in the shot put with a toss of 31’11 1/2” and Powelson took fourth at 30’7”.
Taiclet earned the bronze medal in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 50.6 seconds. She was fifth in the 100-meter high hurdles in 16.7 seconds.
Taiclet, Wilson, Honeycutt and Larson combined for third in the 4×400-meter relay race in 4:30.5. Iola’s 4×800-meter relay team of Abby Works, Sydney Owens, Kristen Linn and Stout placed fifth in 12:44.4.
There were several junior varsity relay races run that did not score points for teams and a throwers’ relay. Medals were awarded in the events.
The Fillies’ junior varsity relay teams took first. The 4×100-meter relay team of Celeste Ambrose, Chanel Coyne, Stout and McGuffin won in 57.8 seconds. The 4×400-meter relay team of Coyne, Stout, Owens and Works won in 5:03.8.
The Mustangs won the throws relay with Thompson, Hutton, Shafer and Heffern in 54.4 seconds. The 4×400-meter relay team of Chris Harrington, Eli Johns, Dakota Sigg and Kauth was second in 3:56.5.
The 4×100-meter relay team of Denton Christian, Stephen McDonald, Sigg and Bossell was fourth in 50.2 seconds. The 4×200-meter relay team of Christian, McDonald, Sigg and Shepherd was fifth.
