Iola High’s junior varsity track athletes finished their 2012 season at home Monday. The Mustangs and Fillies competed in and hosted the annual IHS Junior Varsity Invitational.
The meet featured junior varsity teams from larger schools plus area smaller schools’ varsity athletes.
Pleasanton High’s girls — a varsity led team — won the team title with 202 points. Crest, another mainly varsity team, was second with 94 points.
The Fillies’ JV finished fifth with 44 points followed by Marmaton Valley with 36 points. Humboldt scored 22 points for eighth.
In the boys’ division, Labette County High’s JV edged out Pleasanton with 136 points to 130 points for the team championship. Marmaton Valley was third with 107 points.
The Mustang JV scored 97 points for fourth place. Crest piled up 67 points for fifth and Humboldt was sixth with 55 points.
The Fillies earned one gold medal at the meet. The 4×800-meter relay team of Jo Lohman, Addie Haar, Shannon Vogel and Lauren Hunt won in 11 minutes, 49.86 seconds.
Iola’s boys had one gold-medal winner in Devan Burton. Burton won the 100-meter dash in 11.84 seconds nudging out Crest’s Rene Rodriguez (11.85) and his Iola teammate Fryendz Wallace (11.86). Iola’s Justin Baker ran sixth in 12 seconds and Crest’s Cole Bowen was seventh at 12.14.
Marmaton Valley’s Zach Louk won all three distance races. He won the 1600-meter run in 5:04.25 seconds with Iola’s Blain Klubek in fifth at 5:41 and Travis Hermstein in eighth at 5:52.11.
In the 800-meter run, Louk won in 2:09.81 with Nick Keazer and Rayden Goltry running second and third in 2:20 and 2:21. Iola’s Jacob Cooper took sixth in 2:24 followed by Humboldt’s Blake Crawford in 2:25 and Iola’s Jason Tidd in eighth at 2:29.
Louk took the gold in the 3200-meter run in 11:39. Iola’s Bryan Mueller finished fifth in 12:56.
In the 200-meter dash, Marmaton Valley’s Carlos Gonzales was third in 24.72 seconds and Crest’s Rodriguez was fifth in 25.19. Burton of Iola took sixth in 25.23 followed by Crest’s Jordan Morton in seventh at 25.37 and Iola’s Stephen McDonald was eighth in 25.76.
Humboldt’s Ethan Bartlett won the 400-meter dash in 56.52 seconds ahead of Iola’s Wallace in 56.93. Marmaton Valley’s Lucas Hamlin took third in 58.52 with teammates Garrett Booth in fifth, 1:01.19, and Nick Trollope in seventh at 1:02.
Crest’s Codi Vermilion placed fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles in 20.61 seconds. Humboldt’s Layne Gonzales was sixth in 22.46 seconds.
Marmaton Valley’s Zack English was fifth in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 48.02 followed by Iola’s Garrett Prall in 48.15, Crest’s Vermillion in 52.44 and Iola’s Levi Baker in 53.61.
