PAOLA — Under almost ideal conditions, Iola High’s Mustangs and Fillies competed in Friday’s Paola High Invitational track meet.
The Mustangs finished third behind Paola, 155 points, and Louisburg, 124 points. Iola scored 79 points.
The Fillies placed sixth in the 11-school field with 41 points. Louisburg won the girls’ team title with 134 points followed by Paola and Lansing at 85 and 84, respectively.
At the Paola meet, seven places scored points and four medals were awarded per event.
Seth Browning claimed the gold medal in the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 3.7 seconds. Browning also ran on the silver-medal 4×800-meter relay team and the 4×400-meter relay team that took sixth.
“Seth ran a 2:03 on his 4×800 relay split and a 52.7 split on the 4×400,” said Marvin Smith, IHS head track coach. “This was a very good meet with quality competition.
“Ethan and Aaron Fulton had good meets but all their  events were going on at the same time. They spent a lot of time hustling just to get to their events.”
Ethan Fulton won the long jump event with a leap of 21 feet, 9 1/2 inches. Aaron Fulton was fourth at 20’10” and Dylan Allen placed seventh at 20 feet.
In the 110-meter high hurdles, Ethan Fulton was second at 15.4 seconds and Aaron Fulton was fourth in 15.7. Aaron Fulton earned the silver medal in the javelin with a throw of 160 feet and Ethan Fulton was third at 158’5”.

The Fillies’ other gold medal performance of the day came from Kirstin McGuffin. McGuffin won the javelin with a throw of 115’2”.
“Maggie has become very consistent at 10’6” and it’s just a matter of time before she hits 11 feet,” Smith said. “Kirstin had a really good javelin throw.”
Smith said he held Jazmyne Honeycutt and Molly Maxwell out of the meet because of injuries. Iola took just five girls to Paola as “we chose not to take some of our underclassmen to run relays because we needed them for junior varsity meets.”
Kelsey Larson finished second in the 400-meter dash in 1:03.8. She also took fifth in the 200-meter dash in 28.3 seconds.
Kendra Taiclet was third in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 52.2 seconds. She was fifth in the 100-meter high hurdles in 18.5 seconds.
