BURLINGTON — On a windy day, times on the track were not the fastest. All the sprint and hurdle races were run into the teeth of a strong south wind.
But no matter, Iola High’s Mustangs and Fillies fared well on the track and in the field at Tuesday’s Burlington High Invitational track meet. The Iola teams finished second in their divisions, bringing home team trophies and double-digit numbers of medals.
At Burlington, the top eight places scored points in each event. There were six medals awarded in each event. There were 19 schools competing at the meet.
Chanute High’s boys and girls swept the top team honors. In the boys’ competition, Chanute scored 102 points with the Mustangs in second with 93 points. Chanute’s girls piled up 107.5 points for first with the Fillies scoring 74 points.
Adam Kauth captured gold in the high jump for the Mustangs. He cleared a personal-best 5 feet, 10 inches. It was the only gold medal for the Iola boys.
The Fillies had four gold-medal performances on the day. Ashley Campbell won the 400-meter dash in 61.2 seconds and Breanna Stout placed first in the pole vault, clearing 8’6”.
Campbell and Stout combined with Kelsey Larson and Kendra Taiclet to win the 4×100-meter relay race in 51.9 seconds. Larson and Campbell were joined by Emery Driskel and Addie Haar to claim gold in the 4×400-meter relay race in 4 minutes, 16 seconds.
Taiclet pulled out of the 100-meter high hurdle preliminaries because of illness.
“She anchored the 4×100 for us and that is all she could do,” said Marvin Smith, IHS head coach. “We’re very happy for the girls to bring home 19 medals and a team trophy.”
Campbell earned the silver medal in the high jump, clearing 4’10”. Darci Collins had a personal-best throw of 33’10 1/2” to earn the fourth-place medal in the shot put.
Driskel placed fourth in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 50.9 seconds. Emma Piazza took the fourth-place medal in the 200-meter dash in 28.6 seconds and Larson was fourth in the javelin at 109’10”.
The Fillies’ 4×800-meter relay team of Haar, Larson, Jo Lohman and Driskel took the fifth-place medal in 11:04.9. Piazza earned a medal for sixth in the 100-meter dash in 14.6 seconds.
Adam Kauth picked up two more individual medals in the meet on the track and ran on a relay to earn a medal. Kauth was the silver medalist in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 43.8 seconds and third in the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.9 seconds.
