OSAWATOMIE — While being short-handed, Iola High’s track and field boys still brought home plenty of gold and silver at the Osawatomie Invitational.
The Mustangs were without the services of Jeremy Spears because of injury. The Mustangs also limited the activities of Tyler McIntosh and Jacob Harrison because of nagging injuries.
Those who were able to compete acquitted themselves quite well.
Tyler Powelson was victorious in the 1600-meter run, winning with a time of 4 minutes, 36.6 seconds, the 10th best mark all time in IHS history. Michael Wilson won the pole fault, clearing 12 feet, and Adam Kauth romped through the 110-meter hurdles in 16.6 seconds to win gold.
Powelson also claimed silver in the 800-meter run, finishing in 2:06.4, while Kauth took second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.1 seconds.
Eli Grover was a two-time silver medalist, taking second in the shot put with 41’3” and in the discus in 116’6”.
Taking fourth place was Iola’s 4×100-meter relay team of Kauth, Wilson, Harrison and Powelson, who finished in 47.2 seconds. (Fourth-place finishers also received a bronze medal at Thursday’s competition).
The 4×800-meter relay team of Jacob Cooper, McIntosh, Travis Hermstein and Wilson finished in 9:58.4
Kauth cleared 5’6” to take sixth in the high jump.
The small number of competitors forced Iola to pull out of the 4×400-meter relay competition and forego running any junior varsity relay races.
Still, Iola was able to rack up 69 points, good for sixth as a team. Osawatomie won the event with 102 points, followed by Anderson County with 98.
“The league meet is not far off and we will just have to see who is available,” Iola coach Marv Smith said. “Osawatomie suprised me with their point total. I had pretty much conceded the league title to Anderson County, because they have good numbers.”
McIntosh was able to run but did not do jumping events because of his injury. Harrison’s foot injury forced him to pull out after running the 4×100.
