PAOLA — Iola High’s Mustangs scored 22 points in Friday’s Paola High Invitational track meet. The meet was dominated by Paola and Lansing.
“Eight of the 12 teams scored less than 35 points so points were really hard to come by,” said Marvin Smith, IHS head track coach. “Lansing was dominating on the track, scoring 101 after trailing Paola 77-25 after the field events.”
Paola won the meet with 128 points with Lansing in second place at 126. Louisburg scored 98 points and Wellsville had 52 points. The Mustangs finished 10th overall.
Roman Yocham and Ralph Shafer turned in the top performances of the day for the Mustangs. Yocham earned the bronze medal in the 1600-meter run in 5 minutes, 2.2 seconds. Shafer was third in the javelin with a throw of 155 feet, 2 inches.
“Drew Shepherd vaulted 11’6” for a personal best but it did not place in the pole vault. That would have medaled in most meets,” Smith said.
The Mustangs’ 4×800-meter relay team of Christian Kauth, Mikal Bossell, Tyler Powelson and Yocham finished fourth in 9:01.8. Bossell ran a personal-best time of 54.1 seconds and was sixth in the 400-meter dash.
Adam Kauth missed a medal by .04 of a second in the 110-meter high hurdles as he ran 18.3 seconds for fifth. Christian Kauth was seventh in the 800-meter run in 2:11.9.
The Mustang varsity goes to Independence this Friday. Iola’s junior varsity is at Chanute today.
