HUMBOLDT — Iola and Humboldt joined forces on Friday morning to help each other prepare for the 2016 football season.

With the help of the Sterling College coaching staff, Humboldt hosted high school football programs from Iola, Fredonia and Prairie View for a joint practice.

“I can’t say enough good things about (Humboldt coach Logan) Wyrick and their staff,” Iola coach Doug Kerr said. “It was great work for each of the team’s kids.”

The event was the third time the Iola program has been able to assemble for a joint practice this offseason. The previous ones were at Labette County High School.

“Defensively, this is the best we’ve looked in quite some time,” Mustang coach Doug Kerr said. “Kids were flying around. They were very motivated because Humboldt is a local school and Prairie View is in our league.”

Kerr said he was very pleased with the attendance Iola saw in Humboldt.

“We had about 80 or 90 percent there,” Kerr said. “We were able to get plenty of substitutions in. We lost a little bit when the subs came in, but at some spots, we were just as strong.

“For us, depth is huge, because that allows us to maximize our effort on every play.”

For the Cubs, this is the first time they have been able to get together this summer. Coach Logan Wyrick came away from the practice very pleased with what his team was able to accomplish.

“We had about 90 percent attendance from the guys we expect to have out for football this year,” Wyrick said. “We are super, super young this year, so we are kind of throwing guys out there and seeing how they do. I was really happy with the overall effort. I really liked our defense and that is what we will hang our hat on.”
