BURLINGTON — Ethan Fulton broke the Burlington High Invitational record in the 110-meter high hurdles but did not win gold.
The defending Kansas Class 4A state champion in the 110-meter high hurdles ran it in 14.3 seconds in the preliminaries to break his own meet record of 14.4 set last year.
In the finals, Ethan Fulton hit a hurdle and finished second in 14.4 seconds. Aaron Fulton was third in 15.6 seconds.
But don’t worry, Ethan Fulton earned a gold medal in the 100-meter dash in 11.5 seconds. The Fulton brothers combined with Shane Snavely and Seth Browning to take the silver medal in the 4×100-meter relay race in 45.2 seconds.
“Seth Browning had a super day. We put him as the anchor on the 4×100 because we had to make some changes. The time put up by those four moved them on our honor roll at 19,” said Marvin Smith, IHS head track coach.
Browning combined with Christian Kauth, Ryan Weir and Aaron Cheung to win the 4×800-meter relay race in 8 minutes, 43 seconds. He also earned a relay gold medal in the 4×400 with Mikal Bossell, Charles Apt and Snavely in 3:37.1.
Browning placed second in the 400-meter dash in 51.9 seconds. Wir was sixth in the 800-meter dash in 2:11.8 follwoed by Kauth at 2:13.2.
Darin Hutton won the shot put event with a throw of 49 feet, 2 inches. He was third in the discus at 125’6” and Kyler Thompson placed sixth with a throw of 117’11”.
Drew Shepherd took the silver medal in the pole vault at 10’6”. Aaron Fulton was the silver medalist in the long jump with a leap of 21’11⁄2 inches which put him at 15 on the IHS event honor roll.
Roman Yocham placed eighth in the 1600-meter run in 5:04.8.
The Mustangs piled up 122 points to win the team title. Chanute was second with 87 points and Santa Fe Trail was third with 72 points.
Chanute won the girls’ division title with 101 points. Iola High’s Fillies placed second with 92 points and Olpe was third with 80 points.
Maggie Wilson set a new meet record in winning the girls’ pole vault at 10’6”.  Wilson combined with Kendra Taiclet, Kelsey Larson and Jazmyne Honeycutt for a gold in the 4×100-meter relay race in 52.2 seconds.
Katlyn Cleaver won the discus with a personal-best throw of 116’3”. Kirstin McGuffin was fourth with a personal-best distance of 100’1”.
McGuffin claimed the silver medal in the javelin with a throw of 114’1”. Mindy Powelson took the bronze medal with a throw of 110’7”, a personal best.
Taiclet finished second in the 100-meter high hurdles in 16.9 seconds. She was fifth in the 300-meter low hurdles in 51.8 seconds.
Larson ran second in the 400-meter dash in 62.3 seconds and was third in the 200-meter dash in 28.2. Honeycutt was fifth in 29.6.
Wilson placed third in the 100-meter dash in 13.3 seconds and Honeycutt placed seventh in 14.3 seconds.
Taiclet, Wilson, Honeycutt and Larson combined for seventh in the 4×400-meter relay in 4:33.4. Cleaver finished sixth in the shot put with a toss of 31’51⁄2”.
Iola’s varsities go to Chanute on Friday. The IHS junior varsity athletes will compete Thursday in Iola at the Crest High Invitational starting at 3:30 p.m. at Riverside Park.
