Home is a good place to be.
Just like Independence High’s Bulldogs last week, Iola High’s Mustangs captured the Southeast Kansas League designated golf tournament on their home course Tuesday. The Mustangs played the Allen County Country Club Course well to win the Iola High Invitational.
Led by freshman Kaden Macha, who was the top medalist, Iola posted a 331 team score. Coffeyville was in second with a 333.
Macha shot the low round of the tournament with a 34 in his first nine holes. He finished up with a 38 on the back nine for a winning 72.
The Mustangs placed three freshmen in the top 10 for medals.
Drake Dieker shot an 83 (40-43) for eighth place. Shane Walden carded an 84 (40-44) to take the 10th-place medal.
Senior Zach Crawford finished with a 92 (46-46) tying for 34th place. Kris Collins, another senior, shot a 93 (44-49) to tie for 36th place. Freshman Adam Peterson had a 98 (52-46) for 46th place.
Pittsburg shot a 335 as a team for third place followed by Independence at 336. Fort Scott was fifth with a 344 and Columbus was sixth at 355. Chanute placed seventh with a 367, Labette County was ninth at 371 and Parsons was 10th at 374.
Iola’s “B” team finished eighth with a 368 team score. It was led by senior Doug Stewart’s 87 (42-45) that tied him for 16th. Senior Nick Jacobs carded an 89 (42-47) putting him in a tie for 24th.
Freshman Isaiah Grover shot a 90 (48-42) tying for 27th. Senior Jarrett Mosbrucker had a 102 (49-53) and freshman Matt Jacobs came in at 104 (51-53). Sophomore Weston Hines was disqualified.
With the win at home, the Mustangs moved into second place on the 2012 SEK team standings list. The league has four designated tournaments during the season to accumulate team and individual points for league honors.
Independence leads the league after two tournaments with a 669 team total. Iola is second at 677 and Coffeyville is third at 678.
Macha and Coffeyville’s Brett Yeubanks, who finished second in Tuesday’s tournament, are tied atop the individual scoring list. Both have a 153 total. Walden sits in the top 10 individual spots also for Iola with a 170.
Dieker moved to 18th at 175 and Crawford is 23rd at 179. Collins, with a 186, is 29th. Peterson at 197 is 39th.
Yeubanks and Pittsburg’s Andrew Joy each shot a 75 at Iola’s tournament. Pittsburg’s Johnny Randall was fourth at 76.
