Iola High’s Mustangs were awarded the No. 2 seed in next week’s 2012 Kansas Class 4A Regional Baseball Tournament hosted by Ottawa High School. Ottawa’s Cyclones (16-4) are the top seed.
The Mustangs (13-5) take on No. 7 Prairie View High’s Buffalos at 6 p.m. Monday at Ottawa’s Orlis Cox Complex. They play on West Field. In the same side of the bracket are No. 3 Paola (13-7) and No. 6 Fort Scott (8-10), who play at 4 p.m. on West.
The winners of those games play in the semifinals at 4 p.m. Tuesday on West.
Ottawa plays Anderson County (2-16) at 6 p.m. Monday on Drake Field. Ahead of that game has No. 4 Osawatomie (9-9) playing No. 5 Louisburg (9-11) at 4 p.m. Winners play at 4 p.m. Tuesday on Drake.
The championship game is 6 p.m. Tuesday on Drake Field.
There is an admission fee for spectators the regional.
The past two years the Mustangs have bowed out in the semifinal round of regional play. But their nemesis Spring Hill is not in the regional this year.
Iola is looking for its first-ever state tournament berth. The winner of the regional advances to the 2012 Kansas Class 4A State Baseball Tournament, May 25-26, in Salina.
