CHANUTE — Rain played a big part in how Iola High’s Mustangs played tennis Thursday.
Chanute High’s tennis tournament last Friday was halted because of rain. Iola had its top players in each division on the courts then.
The tournament was postponed until Thursday. No rain in Chanute but three of Iola’s players were unable to return to the courts.
Iola’s No. 1 singles player Kent Toland won 8-0 over Colton Kessler of Labette County last Thursday. But Toland and Jordan Strickler stayed home Thursday because of the Iola High play.
Chase Vaughn and Alec Peterson is Iola’s No. 1 doubles team. They got one match in last week, losing 8-1 to Labette County’s Ryan Robinson and Tyler Julich.
Peterson was unable to return because of a dental appointment. So Garrett Catron stepped in.
Vaughn and Catron had 8-6 wins over Columbus’ Nick Holman and Cody Spainhower and Neodesha’s Kyle Cheshier and Mac Fyfe. They lost 8-4 to Chanute’s Mason Johnson and Jacob Guiot.
Michael Middleton played through as Iola’s No. 2 singles player and went 3-1. He beat Joshua Mathes of Labette County 8-1 then defeated Drake Brassart of Columbus 8-0 and Keaton Kaufman of Neodesha 8-2. Matt Stutt of Chanute beat Middleton 8-0.
Zeph Larney and Andrew Lowell played No. 2 doubles for Iola. They lost 8-5 to Dakota Lewis and Andy Emerson of Labette County, 8-1 to Yo Lee and Braiden Peterson of Columbus, 8-2 to Ian Jones and Mark Diaz of Neodesha and 8-1 to Ian Cheshier and Derek Manley of Chanute.
