High School Tennis: Iola Mustangs

The Iola tennis team competed in the first of three meets this week on Tuesday in Chanute.

The Mustangs were once again without a full team so parts had to be switched around to fill all of their spots plus they also had to work through the weather which was less than accommodating.

Elijah Fawson kept his No. 1 singles spot and went 1-2 beating Fort Scott’s Nick Patton 8-7 before falling to Ottawa’s Matt Schulz 8-4 and Chanute’s Brayden Frederick, 8-2.

Jon Miller, who normally mans the No. 1 doubles team along with Bret Plum-lee, moved to No. 2 singles. Miller was 3-0, beating Fort Scott’s Allen Santana 8-6, Ottawa’s Westen Smith 8-3 and Chanute’s Angelo Andoyo 8-2.

Adryan Nading and Royce Smith moved up to the number one doubles spot and struggled, falling in all three matches. They lost 8-2 to Fort Scott’s Joe Adams and Elijah Wright, 8-0 to Ottawa’s Cory Hack and Lawson Medlen and 8-1 to Chanute’s Braden Robinson and Fisher Lund.

For the No. 2 doubles team, Eason Cheung teamed up with Chanute’s Julius Macher and went 0-3 falling 8-3 to Fort Scott’s Jadyn Royal Bay and Brady Peel, 8-2 to Ottawa’s Jason Ne-smith and Nate Evans and 8-4 to Chanute’s Kolby Ussery and AJ Bollig.

The Mustangs will travel to Pittsburg on Thursday before heading to Neodesha on Saturday.
