INDEPENDENCE — Iola High’s junior varsity wrestlers competed in a tournament hosted by Independence High School Saturday.
Freshman Cody Conner went 2-0 taking first in his weight bracket. Conner got past Colvard of Cherryvale 11-10.
Conner finished the day with pins of Collier of Caney Valley and Whitt of Labette County.
Sophomore Zeph Larney also came away with a gold medal. He was 4-0 with pins of Felts of Coffeyville, McKenzie of Labette County, Dungey of Independence and Richardson of Pittsburg.
Chase Roettgen, a sophomore, took third place in his weight bracket with a 3-2 record. He defeated Cornelio of Pittsburg 18-4 the lost to Kisner of Chanute 10-4 and Griffin of Caney Valley 15-0.
Roettgen ended the day strong pinning Adell of Coffeyville and beating Emerson of Fredonia.
Freshman Travis Rieske was 2-2 and placed third. He defeated Noll of Independence 19-3.
Rieske was pinned by Therrier of Independence and Shamblin of Caney Valley. He came back to pin Finley of Fredonia.
Bryce Misenhelter, a freshman, was fourth at 2-3 in his division. He lost 14-6 to Dixon of Caney Valley then beat Rubin of Fredonia 8-0.
Misenhelter was pinned by Brummett then pinned Nolen of Cherryvale. Gardner of Independence pinned Misenhelter.
Tristan Sigfusson, a freshman, was fourth at 1-3 in his weight bracket. His win was a 9-7 decision over Daniel of Independence. He lost 17-1 to Woods of Coffeyville and was pinned by Brown of Pittsburg and Klauman of Chanute.
Freshman Quinton Morrison lost 4-3 to White of Chanute, was pinned by McGuire of Pittsburg, lost 4-1 to Howard of Fredonia and dropped a 7-4 decision to Lewis of Labette County.
The Mustang junior varsity wrestlers will see some action Tuesday and Thursday in Southeast Kansas League dual meets at Columbus and at home.
They go to Labette County High’s JV Invitational this weekend.
