BURLINGTON — Sophomore Jacob Rhoads is in his first season of wrestling. He is on the Iola High wrestling team as a varsity starter at 145 pounds.
Rhoads had to miss several varsity meets because of an injury so he finished up the regular season at a junior varsity tournament Saturday. He and five other Iola High wrestlers competed at Burlington High.
Rhoads won the 145-pound class going 4-0. He pinned Stone Prough of Washburn Rural in 3 minutes, 14 seconds. Rhoads pinned Michael Boehm of Paola in 1:42.
Rhoads earned a win by a default over Mitch Kelly of Labette County. He ended up the day with a pin of Joey Hughback of Pittsburg in 3:35.
Travis Rieske, a sophomore, and freshman Jordan Long wrestled in the 152-pound division. Rieske started his run to third place with a pin of his teammate in 49 seconds.
Rieske was pinned by Matt McDonald of Washburn Rural in 21 seconds. He rebounded with a pin of Gunther Wehrman in 1:24.
Rieske was pinned by Ryan Clark of Holton in 1:19. He took third by injury default over Kyle Dean of Erie.
Long also earned a win by injury default over Dean. He was pinned by McDonald in 1:01 then lost 16-6 to Wehrman. Clark pinned Long in 3:32.
Tristan Sigfusson, a sophomore, went 3-2 and placed third at 120. He began the tournament on three straight wins.
Sigfusson pinned Elijah Dowd of Holton in 2:56 and won by a 9-0 decision over Gunner Toney of Frontenac. He pinned Caleb Reed of Seaman High of Topeka in 3:33.
Sigfusson lost 15-0 to Jordan Beath of Holton. Grant Meyers of Washburn Rural beat Sigfusson in his last match of the day.
Freshman Kaleb Mock was 0-4 on the day. He was pinned by Brad Smith of Spring Hill in 3:58, lost 1-0 to Casey Garner of Erie, lost 5-2 to Andy Blanto of Osawatomie and was pinned by Sabastian Cuffel of Washburn Rural in 59 seconds.
Junior Raymond Branstetter went 0-5. He was pinned by James Carter of Paola in 1:14, by Lane Britton of Labette County in 1:58, by Tysen Swank of Burlington in 1:52 and by Kyle Hendrickson of Paola in 1:37.
