COFFEYVILLE — Opening the junior varsity portion of Iola High’s 2011-2012 wrestling season, the Mustangs came away with medals in two of the four weight classes they competed in Saturday.
Tristan Sigfusson finished third in the 126-pound class. Sigfusson beat Brent Solcom of Chanute 7-1 in the third-place match. Sigfusson’s only loss was a 15-3 decision against Harrison Kuecherler of Pittsburg A, who was the weight-class champion.
Sigfusson pinned Tanis Cook of Cherryvale in 30 seconds to open the tournament. He defeated Corey Nichols of Webb City, Mo., 9-0 then lost to Kuecher. Sigfusson came back to beat Brice Mileo of Webb City 10-5 to get to the third-place match.
At 195 pounds, Chase Roettgen claimed the third-place medal, going 4-1. Roettgen opened with a 9-0 win over Triston Jansen of Fredonia then lost 7-0 to Alberto Dorantes of Arkansas City, who won the gold medal.
Roettgen rebounded with three straight wins. He pinned Christian Dalton of Pittsburg in 1 minute, 42 seconds then put Jake Cook’s back to the mat in 50 seconds. Roettgen pinned Dylan Zillifro of Cherryvale in 47 seconds for third.
“Tristan and Chase had great days in this 16-man bracket tournament. It was double elimination and our kids wrestled well,” said Rick Horton, IHS assistant wrestling coach.
Travis Rieske came within one match of placing in the 152-pound class. He pinned Jose Montalongo of Pittsburg in 3:00 then was pinned in 1:38 of his next match by Grand Rubin of Fredonia.
Rieske pinned Steven Cronich of Parsons and Alex Gepford of Arkansas City. Rieske lost 7-1 to Garrett Rogers of Webb City. Also at 152, Jordan Long was pinned by Williams McGee of Arkansas City and lost 5-1 to Gepford.
Raymond Brandstetter competed in the 145-pound class. He was pinned by Derek Huschka of Cherryvale then lost 17-5 to Jake Todd of Caney Valley.
“Travis looked really good also. This was Raymond and Jordan’s first action of the season,” Horton said.
The Mustang junior varsity wrestlers go to Cherryvale High’s junior varsity tournament on Saturday.
