COFFEYVILLE — Iola High’s junior varsity football team is 4-0 on the season following a 28-14 win over host Field Kindley High’s Golden Tornado Monday.
“These kids played very aggressively on both sides of the football. Our defense controlled the line of scrimmage the entire game,” said Cody Hager, IHS assistant coach. “Our running backs ran hard with their pads low.”
Isaiah Grover finished off the Mustangs’ first scoring drive of the game. Grover had a four-yard touchdown and tacked on the two-point conversion.
Next, Mustang quarterback Adam Kauth hooked up with Grover on a five-yard touchdown pass. Iola led 14-6 at halftime.
Two fourth-quarter interceptions by Iola’s defense set up scores.
Tyler Clubine took one interception all the way to the end zone on a 65-yard return. Kauth flipped the two-point conversion pass to Cole Morrison.
Kaden Macha snatched a Coffeyville pass and returned it 60 yards. Derrick Weir busted over the goal line from two yards out for the touchdown.
“Every week we feel like David in David and Golaith. The kids responded well with a lot of heart and intensity,” said James Casper, IHS assistant coach.
“Offensively, we had both our passing and running games working. With Trey Colborn back at offensive guard, we ran between the tackles much better.”
The Iola junior varsity hosts Columbus next Monday.
