Iola High’s Mustang junior varsity captalized on a Chanute High mistake to take a 6-0 halftime lead Monday night. The Mustangs responded when the visiting Blue Comets took an 8-6 lead.
At the end of the third quarter, Jesse Zimmerman hauled in his second touchdown pass of the night. This one from Tyler McIntosh for 40 yards to put Iola up to stay 12-8.
McIntosh sealed the win with an interception. It was a defensive game throughout.
A high snap over Chanute’s punter led to Iola’s first score. The Mustangs quickly struck on a 15-yard pass from Adam Kauth to Zimmerman with 35-seconds left in the first half.
“The kids came out ready to play and played hard. They didn’t get down when Chanute the lead,” said Cody Hager, IHS assistant coach.
The Mustang JV is 6-0. Iola goes to Labette County next Monday.
