PITTSBURG — Iola High’s Mustang junior varsity baseball team was on the short end of two scores Tuesday.
The Mustangs lost 4-2 and 5-4 to hosting Pittsburg High’s Purple Dragons.
Pittsburg scored four runs in the third inning of the first game. Iola’s two runs came in the fourth.
The Mustangs had three singles — all in the fourth inning — in the game. Shelton Reno singled to open the inning and Derrick Weir drew a walk. Tyler Tomlinson and Shae Beas-ley each had a base hit.
Reno took the pitching loss. He gave up nine hits, walked three and struck out five.
Pittsburg built a 4-2 lead through three innings in the nightcap. The Mustangs tied it up in the top of the fifth.
Austin Snyder walked to begin the inning, followed by a fielder’s choice by Trent Latta. Reno doubled and Weir had a sacrifice fly to drive in a run. Tomlinson singled in a run.
Tyler Clubine pitched four innings for a no-decision. He was charged with four runs on six hits and five walks. He struck out four.
Latta came on in relief in the fifth. He allowed one run on two hits and a walk as the Dragons pulled out the one-run win.
Other hits in the game for Iola were a single each by Latta, Clubine, Beasley, Trey Wilson and John Whitworth.
