Iola High basketball players attended and played in two team camps this summer.
Two weekends ago, seven IHS players under the direction of Mustang head coach Bill Peeper went 5-4 at the Oklahoma State University team camp in Stillwater, Okla. The Mustangs had a 1-3 start to the competition, losing in the semifinals of their division’s bracket play.
“It was a great experience for our kids. We took four seniors and three younger players,” Peeper said.
“We played some smaller schools and some larger school teams along with private and public schools. We played teams from Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas.”
Christian Kauth, Clint Heffern, Braden Larson and Jarred Latta, all seniors, along with junior Eli Grover and sophomores Adam Kauth and Tyler Powelson were on the team at OSU. Peeper said teams were divided into pools and divisions to compete against similar sized schools.
Earlier in the summer, Peeper said he took a team with one senior and the rest sophomores to the Pittsburg State team camp. Iola was 1-7 in that competition, beating Oswego.
“It was worth it for all the kids, especially our younger players. We played some close games at Pittsburg,” Peeper said.
“Our kids played with a lot of confidence and energy at Oklahoma State. It was great to place in our division.”
Peeper said he had 20 players at the Mustang team camp at the beginning of June.
He said he was pleased with what he saw from his team during summer workouts.
