Mustang and Fillie junior varsity and freshmen play Wellsville

While Iola’s varsity teams came away from Wellsville with losses Friday night, the freshmen Mustangs and Fillies walked away with wins. 

The Mustang freshmen continued their undefeated streak with a 43-11 win. 

Iola shut the Eagles out in the first quarter and allowed only four points in the second quarter and three in the third. The Mustangs did the majority of their damage in the first three quarters, scoring just two free throws in the fourth quarter. 

Nathan Louk had a team-high 12 points followed by eight for Landon Carson and Dillon Bycroft. Jack Adams had four points, Isaac Badders had two and Josh Kaufman and Dillon Slaven each had a point. 

Meanwhile, the freshmen Fillies also came away with a win, beating the Lady Eagles 24-12. 

Lauryn Holloway had 14 points followed by seven for Hannah Gardner. Becca Sprague had two and Kelsey Finley had a point. 

While both ninth-grade teams prevailed, the junior varsity came up short. 

The JV boys lost 38-37.

Sophomore Cal Leonard had 11 points and three threes in the loss followed by six for junior Hunter Preston. Sophomore Calvin Delich had five points, junior Blake Ashmore had three points and senior Bryce Andres, sophomore Noah Ashmore and senior Kanyon Beasley each had two points. Sophomore Elijah Fawson had a point. 

The JV girls fell 34-21. 

Sophomore Gabby Richards had a team-high six points while junior Shaylee Sutterby and sophomore Elysia Kunkler each had four points. Junior Ellie Carson had three points and sophomores Kelsey Morrison and Ella Taylor each had two points. 

The Iola varsity will be back in action on Tuesday versus Sabetha in the opening round of the Burlington Invitational Tournament. The freshmen will play at 5:30 p.m. today.
