EUREKA — Bryce Misenhelter claimed third place in the 182-pound division at Saturday’s 18th Annual Eureka High Invitational wrestling tournament.
Misenhelter had the top performance of the day for Iola High’s Mustangs. He opened the day with a 7-2 win over Clayton Jackson of Chase County.
In the quarterfinals, the sophomore lost 8-3 to Fredonia’s Luke Plummer. Misenhelter bounced back by pinning Gage Holler of Central Heights in 1 minute, 55 seconds.
Misenhelter won the third-place match by major decision, 15-4, over Jackson of Chase County.
Iola finished ninth as a team with 66 points. El Dorado won the team title with 201. 5 points. There were 21 teams in the tournament.
Freshman Trey Colborn finished fourth in the 285-pound class. He was pinned by Caney Valley’s Stephen Baker in 5:17 in his first match of the day.
Colborn pinned Daniel Couch of Central of Burden in 37 seconds then did the same to Eureka’s Quade McCoy in 2:09. That put him back in the third-place match against Baker. Baker won by a fall in 4:53.
Chase Roettgen, a junior, placed fifth in the 220-pound class. He lost a 7-4 decision to Garrett Armstrong of El Dorado.
In the consolation bracket, Roettgen recorded a pin in 3:53 of T.J. Anziana of Rose Hill and won 11-6 over Ethan Gutus of Caney Valley.
Roettgen dropped a 6-3 decision to Tyler Klick of Central Burden. He took fifth on a default win over Travis Vaughn of Eureka. Vaughn had reached the five-match-a-day limit.
That limit came into play for Iola sophomore Cody Conner. He had to settle for sixth place in the 132-pound class because he had reached the limit.
Conner opened with a pin of Willy Boentarahendro of Clearwater in 1:25. He lost to Kasey Biddle of Central of Burden by fall in 1:34.
Conner came back to win by pins over Dakota Cline of Eureka, 37 seconds, and Brayden Putter of Marion, 1:14. He lost to John Rodriguez of Caney Valley on a 15-0 technical fall.
Conner moved into the fifth-place match but could not wrestle because of match limits. He had to default to Levi Snow of Central Heights.
Devin Culler went 2-2 in 160-pound action. He pinned Colin Kresta of Wichita West in 2:32 then lost 4-3 to Darick Jones of Clearwater. Culler beat Tanner Jones of Hillsboro 2-1 but lost to Herington’s Kaleb Gillis 6-2.
