It was a mixed bag for the Humboldt Middle School boys and girls on Monday when they traveled to take on Eureka.

The girls won two of their three games while the boys lost both of their match-ups including a heart-wrenching triple-overtime defeat for the Cub A-Team.

The Humboldt boys lost by 16 the first time they played Eureka this season but their hard work and determination saw them through regulation and two overtimes before the Tornados pulled away for a 51-44 win.

“This was probably the best we played all year,” head coach Jeremy Weilert said. “I am extremely proud of our effort.  In the end, they hit their shots in the third overtime and we went cold.”

Trey Sommer led the way with 13 points to go along with eight rebounds followed by 10 for Maddox Johnson who had 10 with five rebounds, two blocks and four assists.

Dakota Slocum had seven points and led the team in rebounds with nine. Aiden Gean scored six. Brennen Nuessen had four and William Kobold and Trayce Slocum each had two.

The B-Team held with Eureka but a slow start and a 10-point halftime deficit was too much to overcome as they lost 27-19.

Sam Hull had 15 and five rebounds in the loss followed by four points from Landon Bauer.

MEANWHILE, the girls A-Team won their game 22-14.

“We played very well on the defensive end last night,” head coach Jason Weilert said. “We also took better care of the ball and that led to more offensive chances which really showed. It was by far one of our better games of the year.”

Kenisyn Hottenstein had eight points and Emily Ross had five points and seven rebounds. Karley Wools had five steals.

The other winner was the Lady Cub C-Team who downed Eureka 14-10.

Ashlynn Works had eight points and five rebounds and Heidi Walker had four points. Elizabeth Melendez had five rebounds and two steals.

The girls B-Team lost to Eureka 27-17.
