Mid-season tournaments on tap for preps

Five of the seven area schools participate in mid-season basketball tournaments. Tournament week starts Tuesday.
Southern Coffey County High’s basketball teams are idle. They are gearing up for the Lyon County League Tournament Jan. 23-28 at Emporia.
Yates Center High’s Wildcat squads play a regular season schedule. The Wildcats don’t play Tuesday but go to Hartford Friday for a non-league doubleheader.
Iola High’s Fillies and Mustangs are at Burlington in the annual Burlington High Invitational. Both Iola teams finished sixth a year ago.
Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcat teams are in the Southeast High Lancer Classic in Cherokee. The Lancer Classic is Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
Humboldt, Uniontown and Crest are in the Pleasanton High Blu-Jays Mid-Season Tournament. Tournament games are played Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Burlington Invitational
The Mustangs (5-4) are seeded fourth. The Fillies (3-6) are the sixth seed in their division.
The Fillies take on third-seeded Santa Fe Trail (6-1) at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Burlington High School gym. Win or lose the Fillies play at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
Also in their half of the bracket are second-seeded Sabetha (7-1) and seventh-seeded Paola (2-6).
In the other half of the bracket, Burlington is top-seeded at 8-0 and play Rossville (2-7) on Tuesday. Labette County (5-2) is fourth seeded and play fifth-seeded Topeka-Hayden (4-2).
The championship semifinals are Friday in the BHS gym and the consolation semifinals are in the Burlington Middle School gym.
The championship game is at 3:10 p.m. Saturday at the high school and at the same time is the fifth-place game at the middle school.
The seventh-place game is at noon Saturday at the middle school and the third-place game is at noon at the high school.
In the opening round Tuesday, the Mustangs play fifth-seeded Paola (3-5) at 5:05 p.m. in the BMS gym. Win or lose Tuesday, the Mustangs play at 8:15 p.m. Friday.
Sabetha (6-2) drew the boys’ top seed and plays Rossville (2-7) Tuesday. Those two are in Iola’s half of the bracket.
Topeka-Hayden (5-2) is seeded No. 2 and plays seventh-seeded Labette County (2-5) Tuesday. Burlington (5-3) is the No. 3 seed and plays No. 6 seeded Santa Fe Trail (2-5).
The championship semifinals are Friday in the BHS gym and the consolation semifinals are in the Burlington Middle School gym.
The championship game is at 4:45 p.m. Saturday at the high school and at the same time is the fifth-place game at the middle school.
The seventh-place game is at 1:35 p.m. Saturday at the middle school and the third-place game is at the same time at the high school.
Lancer Classic
Marmaton Valley’s boys finished seventh and the girls were eighth in last year’s Classic.
The Wildcat boys (2-6) were seeded sixth in this year’s tournament. They play third-seeded Oswego at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the west gym.
Marmaton Valley’s girls (0-8) take on top-seeded Oswego at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the east gym.
Championship and consolation semifinals are played Thursday. The championship games, third-place games, fifth-place games and seventh-place games are Friday.
Pleasanton
Uniontown High’s Eagles (7-1) are the top seeded team in the boys’ division at the 2011 Blu-Jays Mid-Season Tournament. They play Altoona-Midway at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the south gym.
Humboldt High’s Cubs are fifth seeded and take on Jayhawk-Linn at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the north gym. The Cubs are in the same side of the bracket as the Eagles.
Crest High’s Lancers (4-2) are third seeded and play Prairie View at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the south gym. Central Heights is seeded No. 2 and plays Pleasanton.
Semifinals for the championship and consolation sides are Thursday. The championship game is at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the north gym.
Uniontown High’s girls (5-3) are seeded No. 3 and will play sixth-seeded Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the north gym. Crest High’s Lady Lancers (1-5) are seventh seeded and play Central Heights at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the south gym.
Prairie View is the girls’ No. 1 seed and plays Altoona-Midway. Jayhawk-Linn and Pleasanton are fourth and fifth seeded.

Deciding games for third, fifth and seventh places for the girls and boys are also on Saturday.
