PARSONS — Returning to play after a two-week break can be tough. A loss in overtime can make it tougher. Allen Community College’s men’s basketball team fell to Labette 98-95 in overtime Wednesday night.
The largest lead either team was able to reach was six points, forcing the game back and forth the entire way. The Red Devils held a 45-40 lead at halftime.
Allen led by three points with 20 seconds to go in regulation, but an ACC player fouled Labette near the basket and the shot went in. After hitting the free throw, the teams needed overtime to finish the game. The Red Devils were outscored 7-4.
Coach Andy Shaw said Allen outrebounded Labette by 12, but turnovers proved to be to costly — the Red Devils had 23 of them.
“We were very sloppy with the basketball in our first game back from Christmas break,” Shaw said.
Courtney Stockard came back to the team with a double-double, posting 30 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. He also had three blocks and two steals on defense. Josh Sweet followed with 14 points, making 4-9 from beyond the arc. Darnell Jones-Bowie scored 11 points and Jordan Nanton added 10.
Labette’s Tevin Foster scorched the Red Devils with 33 points, shooting a perfect 6-6 from the 3-point line. Overall Labette was 13-21 from 3-point range.
Allen plays on the road Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Neosho.
