SEWARD Allen Community College traveled across the state for a date with Seward County Community College Wednesday night on the hardwood. While the mens six-game win streak was on the line, the Lady Devils were hoping to keep the momentum alive from Saturdays win over Garden City.
ACC MEN
Trailing Seward by 13 points with three minutes remaining in the first half, ACC closed the half with a big run to bring itself within 4 at the break. The Saints replied with a run of their own to start the second half, but the Red Devils didnt allow Seward to pull too far away.
With five minutes remaining, ACC took the lead, and both teams proceeded to exchange buckets down the stretch. Joel Boyce pushed ACCs lead to three with less than a minute to go with a steal and strong finish at the rim.
With 10 seconds remaining, and trailing by two, Seward intentionally fouled Trez Hankins. The first attempt from the charity strike dropped through the net, but the second rimmed out. Seward quickly gathered the rebound to push the ball up the court for one final prayer. The deep three at the buzzer was no good, and the Red Devils captured the 78-75 victory.
Boyce led the Red Devils with 21 points along with seven rebounds. Also finishing in double figures were Hankins with 17 points, and Malik Hardmon with 10.
With the win, ACCs winning streak moves to seven games. More importantly, the Red Devils remain perfect in the Jayhawk Conference with a 3-0 record. Allen will be back at home this Saturday and Wednesday for games against Colby and Dodge City.
ACC WOMEN
ACC fully understood the tall task of facing a nationally ranked opponent and the Lady Devils didnt back down. The Devils started strong, earning a 6-0 lead, and were able to keep the momentum through the first period. Leading 16-15 to start the second quarter, Seward punched back on an 8-0 run to take the lead, 23-16. The Saints continued to pour it on, and pulled away to a 44-26 lead.
ACC managed to get back on track in the second half, but ultimately couldnt make up for a poor second quarter. Seward closed out the Lady Devils comfortably, 85-55. Ariel Walker finished with a team-high 16 points and Masie Schroeder and Taryn Kelley each added nine.
Currently, ACC sits at 6-6 and 1-2 in the Jayhawk Conference. The Lady Devils have already doubled their win count from a season ago. The Ladies will be in action at home on Saturday and Wednesday, facing Colby and Dodge City.
