The Kansas Horseshoe Pitchers Association honored Dave Mathewson, Iola, with the 2017 KHPA Achievement Award over the weekend at the Kansas State Horseshoe Tournament held in Ottawa.
Mathewson has been a part of the of the KHPA for 15 years and has been a key part of keeping the sport alive in this area.
“Dave has always been a steadfast supporter and participant of this sport,” KHPA Achievement Committee Chairman and Humboldt native Neil Hartwig said. “He has been instrumental in promoting interest in horseshoe pitching in the southeast part of the state by helping and holding several tournaments in different locations.”
Mathewson established courts in Bronson and helped get them ready to host the World Tournament in 2015. He is also an Air Force Veteran.
At the state tournament, Tim Spexarth of Wichita won first in the men’s championship class with a 9-1 record, Ora Lee Jeardoe of Concordia placed first in the women’s championship class with a 8-0 record, Roger Vogel of El Dorado finished first in the Elders Championship class with a 10-0 record, Ryan Russell of Hoyt finished first in the Junior Boys Championship class with a 6-0 record, Mary Rongish of Wichita finished first in the Junior Girls Championship class with a 3-1 record and Briahna Barnett took first in the Cadets Championship Class with a 6-0 record.
In addition to being KHPA Achievement Committee chairman, Hartwig also competed in the tournament in the Elders C Class Championship less than two years after suffering a heart attack.
Hartwig finished sixth.
