Marmaton Valley girls advance in 2-1 A regional

UNIONTOWN — Down 4-0, Marmaton Valley High’s Wildcats got busy with the bats Monday.
The Wildcats used nine of their 10 hits of the game in a seven-run third inning. Marmaton Valley’s defense and Shelby Norman made thte 7-4 lead hold up.
The Wildcats won 7-5 against St. Paul High’s Indians in the first round of a Kansas Class 2-1A Softball Regional Tournament Monday. The tournament is hosted by Uniontown High School.
“Defensively, we kept the ball in front of us and held St. Paul to only one base at a time on hits,” said Brenda Mills, Wildcat head coach.
“Shelby pitched well. She and Alysha Westhoff were great leaders keeping the team focused.”
Norman gave up eight hits but did not issue a walk. She had eight strikeouts.
Cheyanne Miller had a single and a double as did  Kacie Shadden and Kayla McNutt. Hitting a single each for the Cats were Maggie Meiwes, Westhoff, Michelle Heskett and Kailey Boyd.
Marmaton Valley (9-10) takes on top-seeded Pittsburg St. Mary’s-Colgan at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Uniontown.
