High School Baseball: Marmaton Valley Wildcats

Marmaton Valley baseball came away with a split Monday when it hosted Northeast Arma.

The team won the first game 16-6 before falling in the second game 12-9. The Marmaton Valley boys are 2-4 overall this season.

In the first game, the Wildcats jumped out to a big 10-1 lead after the first inning. Arma added a run in the top of the second but Marmaton Valley responded right back in the bottom of third with two runs to bring their lead to 12-2.

The Wildcats scored their 13th run in the top of the fourth inning but the Vikings scored four runs in the bottom of the inning cutting Marmaton Valley’s lead to 13-6.

The Wildcats closed out the game with three runs in the bottom of fifth.

Starter Caiden Elliot got his first win of the season allowing six runs on seven hits and a walk with four strikeouts in four innings.

Xavier Bauer was a perfect 3-3 in the game scoring two RBI’s on three hits and a walk. Gage Griffith recorded two hits and scored three runners.

In the second game, it was NE-Arma that took an early lead scoring two runs in the top of the first before adding a third run in the top of the third. The Wildcats scored their first run in the bottom of the inning and cut the Vikings’ lead to 3-1.

A four-run fourth inning for Marmaton Valley put the Wildcats out in front with a lead that they held all of the way until the seventh inning.

The Vikings tied the game all up at five with runs in the top of the fourth and sixth innings and then took a big swing in the top of the seventh, scoring seven runs.

The Wildcats dug their way back in scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh but couldn’t get those last three runs across to extend the game.

Lane Bahnsen earned the loss in relief, allowing eight runs on eight hits and a walk in two innings.

“The first three runs we gave up were because of errors and ended up deciding the outcome,” head coach Derek Scharff said. “Lane came in relief and did what he was supposed to which was throw strikes. Northeast had a great seventh inning, hitting the ball and took a lead that we couldn’t overcome. We made a little effort in the bottom of the seventh but fell short. We need to keep improving both sides of the ball and I think we have the capability to win some games.”

The Wildcats host Crest on Thursday for a doubleheader.
