Marmaton Valley and Yates Center softball pull off comebacks in split

MORAN — Both Marmaton Valley and Yates Center softball got late-inning rallies Monday night, ending the series in a split. 

Yates Center got an extra inning, 15-11 win in game one before Marmaton Valley came back in game two with six runs in the bottom of the seventh for a walk-off 13-12 win. 

The split moved Marmaton Valley to 5-1 so far this season while Yates Center moved to 3-3.

In game one, both teams left the seventh inning tied up at five. 

Both teams put up three runs in the eighth inning before Yates Center scored seven runs in the ninth to take a 15-8 lead. Marmaton Valley scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth but couldn’t push the rally further. 

Maddie Collins got the win for Yates Center allowing 11 runs (eight earned) on 15 hits and eight walks with 11 strikeouts. 

Karlie Stephens was saddled with the loss after allowing 15 runs (only six of them earned) on 15 hits and five walks with four strikeouts. 

Morgan Collins and Allie Chrisman each had three hits while Maddie Collins, Taylor Jacobs and Kyra Griffith each had two. 

Stephens led the way offensively for Marmaton Valley with three hits followed by two for Shaylee Woods, Aly Ard, Julianna Sprague, Kendall Scharff and Kayla Ard. 

Marmaton Valley committed eight errors in the game while Yates Center had three. 

Yates Center took that end-of-game-one momentum into game two, starting it off with a six-run first inning. 

Marmaton Valley answered back with two runs in the bottom of the first and two innings later, Yates Center and Marmaton Valley both scored two runs to make the score 8-4. 

Yates Center scratched across another run in the top of the fourth to push its lead to five before Marmaton Valley cut things to three with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. 

After a run each in the sixth inning, Yates Center pushed its lead back to five, putting all of the pressure on Marmaton Valley to punch back for a final time. 

That’s when Marmaton Valley went off, scoring five runs, tying the game and loading the bases with no outs. 

Catcher interference by Yates Center’s Jordan Weseloh sent the final run of the game home, giving Marmaton Valley the win and the home split.
