Lynn stays alive, Sullivan loses out at 4A state

SALINA — It was a bittersweet day for Iola High wrestling Friday at Salina’s Bicentennial Center.

Iola High’s Chris Lynn recorded the first win at a state wrestling tournament for the Mustang wrestling program.

After losing his first match Friday in the 2010 Kansas Class 4A State Wrestling Tournament, Lynn was able to stay alive in the double-elimination event later in the afternoon. Lynn pinned Adam Luthi, a junior from Holton High, in 3 minutes, 17 seconds of their 285-pound consolation round match.

Lynn, a junior, advances to this morning’s consolation cross bracketing round. He faces Paola High senior Cale Karigan. Win and he goes to the consolation quarterfinals. Two more wins would put him in medal contention for fifth and sixth place.

Wrestling begins at 9 o’clock today with fifth-place matches slated to begin at 1:45 p.m.

Lynn was pinned by Parker Broadfoot, a Hesston senior, in the first round of the 285-pound class.

Iola High junior Marcus Sullivan finished his second season of Mustang wrestling Friday. Iola’s 160-pound competitor was pinned in 1:15 of his opening-round match against  Clay Center High junior Colton Easterberg.

Sullivan, who ended up 31-9 on the season, lost a heartbreaker in the first round of consolation of the 160-pound division. Colby High senior Toby Taylor edged Sullivan 11-9.
