Local Special Olympics teams compete at summer games

Special Olympics:

The ANW Co-op and Allen County Special Olympics teams competed in the 2018 Special Olympics Kansas Summer Games held at South Maize High School on Friday and Saturday.

The teams attended the opening ceremonies on Friday evening before competing on Saturday. They also attended a banquet Saturday evening and went to Chuck E. Cheese before closing things out on Sunday with relay races.

Below are team results:

For the ANW Co-op team, Aiden Fraker, Paige Riley and Keegan Hedman finished first in the tennis ball throw. Mark McCullough finished first in the softball throw while Manuel Doolittle and Conner Merando came in fourth.

Xavier Burrow finished first in the standing long jump while Riley finished sixth.

In the 50-meter walk, Hedman and Merando finished first while Burrow finished second and Fraker finished fourth. McCullough finished first in the 100-meter walk while Doolittle finished fourth and Christopher White finished fifth.

White also finished fifth in the shot put.

Lastly, the relay team of Doolittle, McCullough, Merando and White finished sixth.

The Allen County Special Olympics team was just as successful.

Brandon Griggs finished first in the softball throw followed by Judy Branstetter in second and Casey and Steven Riebel in third.

Tom Weide and Casey Riebel both finished first in the 50-meter walk while Branstetter finished second. Steven Riebel finished second in the 25-meter assisted walk.

Branstetter finished first in the running long jump and Griggs finished second in the standing long jump. Tom Weide finished seventh in the shot put.
