SALINA — Lizzi White notched a piece of wrestling history Thursday.
The Humboldt High sophomore became the first Lady Cub to earn a state wrestling medal in the program’s brief history.
White brought home sixth place in the 191-pound division at the Class 4-1A State Wrestling Tournament.
White, who ended the season with a 15-10 record, did so the hard way.
After falling in her opening-round match the day earlier, White rolled through consolation action to secure the medal.
She pinned Holton’s Madeline Montgomery in 90 seconds, then pinned Norton’s Kenya Goss in 3 minutes, 33 seconds in their quarterfinal matchup. That win was key, because it clinched at least a sixth-place finish and a state medal.
White fell in the consolation semis against Buhler’s Emilie Schweizer via a pin in the second period, and then fell via pin to Madi Tolle of Lindsborg-Smoky Valley in the fifth-place match.
Elsewhere, Humboldt’s Lulu Melendez bowed out in consolation play in the 101-pound bracket.
After falling to Maaliyah Lopez of Burlington in her first match Wedesday, Melendez fell to Grace Noel of columbus with a 4-2 decision to end her competition.
